The area around the east side of Kamakura Station was the scene of downtown during the Kamakura Shogunate. Yoritomo Minamotono built Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine and founded Kamakura City with Wakamiyaouji as its center. As a result there are some historic sites related to Yoritomo such as Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. There is a famous street near Kamakura Station called Kamachi Dori which contains many gift shops and restaurants and is often filled with tourists.
Around the west side of Kamakura Station there is a temple called Jufukuji, it is the 3rd temple among the five principal temples in Kamakura. It was built where the residence of Yorimotofs father, Yohitomo Minamotono once stood.
You can also find Kaizuoji, Eishoji and Jyoukoumyouji temples, famous as flower temples and Zeniarai Benten Shrine, famous for washing coins with spring water with the hopes that the money will return in double.
Around Kamakura Omachi there are three temples, Myohoji Temple, Ankokuronji Temple and Choshoji Temple whose thatched roofs where first built by the priest Nichiren. Also, there is Anyouin Temple that is famous for being connected to Yoritomofs wife, Masako Hojyo.
Around Nikaido there is Kakuonji Temple which retains the atmosphere of the Kamakua Era. Zuisenji Temple is famous as a flower temple. Near Kamakura Reien cemetery you can find Asahina Kiritoshi that is representative of the seven ancient roads of Kamakura.
Near Zaimokuza you can find Komyoji Temple that is the head temple of the Jodo Buddhist sect from the Kanto area. Also located here is Kuhonji Temple, which was one of the places that Yohisada Niita used as a headquarters when he attacked Kamakura. The oldest port in Japan, Wagaejima, is also located here. |
